Fair Food
Elephant ears, corn dogs, French fries, sausage dogs and gyros are just a few foods patrons long for in the fall when the smell of fried everything consumes the air at South Carolina’s county and state fairs. Sure some people love the thrill of the rides while others get a kick out of the games, but there are a fair number of fair food aficionados.

Who counts calories or stays true to their diet when they visit the fair? The food is greasy, but the fair only comes to town once a year. Besides, you can get most fair food year round, but there’s something about getting it from the fair. Then there are those foods that you just don’t hear of until you’ve visited the fair. Last year’s craze at the South Carolina State Fair was fried Pepsi. That’s right, fried Pepsi. Yes, you normally buy it in a can, bottle or cup, but how about fried in dough?! A little unusual, but people buy it, just as they do the fried Snickers, Oreos and Twinkies.
Fast food restaurants have nothing on fairs when it comes to super size. Some of South Carolina’s fairs serve huge 1.5 pound turkey legs! Bring a big appetite for one of these roasted drumsticks. The giant corn dog is a popular choice too, alongside an order of Fiske fries doused with vinegar.
Among the foods not soaked in grease that fair-goers enjoy are candied apples and cotton candy. They’re traditional, yet popular, especially among those with a sweet tooth.
Whether you like the rides, games or the food, we invite you to visit South Carolina’s state or county fairs.
