‘Out of this World’ Cosmic Dogs
You’re sure to take a trip down memory lane when you walk into
Jack’s Cosmic Dog. Wear your Bobbie socks and poodle skirts and you’ll be taken back to your teenage years. The retro-style diner is furnished with Formica tables, antique soda coolers, a jukebox, and chandeliers made of tea cups, saucers and spoons.

The hot dog joint is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike. John’s Island resident K.C. Lombard brings his out-of-town guests to Jack’s. “There’s a few places that are kinda eclectically local and unique. We try to take our guests to those places. They’re more officially Charleston and Jack’s is definitely one of a kind. Everybody loves a good hotdog.”
And Jack’s serves them almost any way you can think of. You can have a dog with chicken, meatloaf or ham. Toppings on the dogs include all the staples and for an added kick, try Jack’s sweet potato mustard, blue cheese slaw or zippy onion relish. Vegetarians, the Vegeroid, Bunny in a Bun and Vulcan Veggie Max were created with you in mind. If what your taste buds are calling for is not on the menu, you can do as John Kendig and create your own. Kendig and his family, who were visiting from Texas, made two trips to Jack’s during they’re stay in Charleston. It was a winner for his children, 17-year-old Amanda and 11-year-old Jack.
“I love the atmosphere. It’s very relaxed. You don’t have to dress up. You can just come

in like a beach bum like I am today, enjoy it and have a good time,” says Amanda, who ordered the Krypto Kraut during both visits. “It’s really, really delicious comfort food. The fries are awesome.”
Jack is not big on hotdogs, so he tried Jack’s Rocket Corn Dog. “This is amazing! It’s probably one of the best I’ve ever had,” says Jack as he finishes off the deep fried corn dog on a stick.
Amanda and Jack’s mom Laurie says Jack’s is the perfect beach place to go. She had the Galactic Dog with chili, cheese, coleslaw and spicy mustard. Laurie describes the flavor as “out of this world.”
Whatever you decide to order when you’re at Jack’s, wash it down with a long neck bottle of pop, brewery draft root beer or a milkshake.
You’ll find Jack’s on Highway 17 North in Mt. Pleasant tucked in the midst of numerous roadside stands where sweet grass baskets are sold. The yellow cinder block building with blue shutters is easily visible from the highway.
