What is a Palmettovore?

In school, most students learn that an herbivore eats only plants, and a carnivore only consumes meat. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture has coined the term Palmettovore, and they’re recruiting consumers who would love to be in that number. Perhaps you are unknowingly a Palmettovore.

What exactly is a Palmettovore? Are you committed to only purchasing and consuming products that are grown and produced in the Palmetto State? Then you are a Palmettovore.

If you’re not a Palmettovore, take the challenge to eat locally grown produce. Got a summer family reunion or barbecue planned? Create a menu of South Carolina products and help produce more Palmettovores.  Shop at South Carolina farmers markets, roadside stands or grocery stores for fresh fruits and vegetables to prepare.  Just look for the Certified SC Grown label.

South Carolina produce ripen in the fields before they make it to local markets and restaurants, leaving them fresh and full of natural nutrients and flavor.

Even if you don’t do a lot of cooking, you can still eat South Carolina products because local chefs have them Fresh on the Menu. Many South Carolina restaurants have committed to serving in-season South Carolina grown foods.

Take the challenge. Become a Palmettovore!
