The Sweetery
For more than 25 years, Jane Jarahian and her staff have been mixing flour, eggs, sugar and butter to create some of the best baked goods South Carolina has to offer.
The Sweetery, in Anderson, SC, bakes birthday and wedding cakes, specialty cookies, gourmet brownies, pecan pies and most anything else at the customer’s request.
“My favorites are the birthday cakes for the people in their 90s and going away cakes for people in the service. That’s always touching,” states Jarahian. “I especially enjoyed baking a cake for someone who had reached 104 years of age.”
Jarahian started out baking for restaurants and later expanded the bakery business for the general public. “There was a need for that with everybody working and their time being limited,” said Jarahian.
Business kicks into overdrive at The Sweetery at the end of the year.
“Starting about the second week of November until Christmas we stay head over heels and wear our roller skates to work,” she says. Indeed a good problem to have during tough economic times. “We’ve heard that during times like these people tend to continue to buy comfort food.”
You can definitely find comfort in their signature cake, The Ugly Cake. According to the name, one would assume that there’s nothing pretty about it, but the yellow cake with a sweet cheesecake bottom and pecans in between is pretty tasty. The Sweetery’s most popular item is the strawberry cake. Fresh strawberries are in the cake and the filling. Yum!
Not everything is sweet to the taste buds at The Sweetery. The business is part bakery and part deli. Hot and cold sandwiches, pasta, salads and homemade soup are served for lunch. “Our deli has definitely evolved, and in the last year, we’ve added quiches and dinner dishes, chicken salad and pimento cheese.” All lunch orders come with a sweet treat!
If you didn’t have a sweet tooth before, you probably have one by now.
